Be: The Art of Choosing Who You Are—Not Who You Were

“You are under no obligation to be who you were five minutes ago"

Empowering Word Artist Bysarahjanebailey

In a world constantly trying to define us, sometimes the most empowering thing we can do is simply choose who we are. We are not obligated to be who we were five minutes ago, and there is power in that freedom. My latest piece, titled 'BE', captures this idea with striking simplicity. Against a sleek black background, white typography spells out words like brave, creative, confident, and authentic—qualities that remind us of the freedom we have to step into a new version of ourselves at any moment.

The Power of Words in Shaping Identity

Words are more than just decorations; they are building blocks for the self. When we surround ourselves with words that resonate, they begin to shape the qualities we wish to embody. 'BE', is filled with intentional words chosen not just for their beauty, but for their ability to remind us of our strength, creativity, and resilience. Each word is an invitation to lean into the parts of ourselves that might sometimes go unnoticed.

Take “Brave,” for example. It’s a call to face our fears, big or small, and to approach life with courage. “Creative” reminds us of the endless possibilities within us and our ability to shape our lives. Each word in this piece was chosen with care to serve as a guide, helping us move closer to who we want to be.

Embracing the Freedom to Evolve

One of life’s greatest gifts is the freedom to evolve. We are not static beings tied to past choices or outdated identities. Be invites us to embrace this freedom fully—to shed the labels and expectations that no longer fit and to step into a version of ourselves that feels true, right now.

Choosing to evolve in a world that celebrates predictability isn’t always easy, but it’s necessary for genuine self-discovery. We often hold ourselves back out of a desire for consistency, but when we allow ourselves to explore new qualities and facets of who we are, we honor our true potential.

The Intentional Act of Choosing Who We Are

Identity isn’t something that’s set in stone; it’s a living, breathing part of us that grows and adapts. Each day, we have the opportunity to choose who we want to be—not who we think we should be or who others expect us to be, but who we feel called to be. Be serves as a reminder of this freedom.

This piece isn’t just about adding words to a page; it’s about the power of choice. Each word in Be represents a guiding light, a quality we can choose to embody daily. By choosing who we want to be, we free ourselves from the constraints of past identities and outdated beliefs, stepping into a fuller, more authentic version of ourselves.

The Daily Ritual of Remembering

Art has a unique way of grounding us, especially when it contains words that remind us of who we can be. 'BE', is a piece meant to be revisited daily—a touchstone that encourages reflection and growth. Each time you look at it, it’s an invitation to consider, Who do I want to be today?

The beauty of BE lies in its simplicity and power. It’s a gentle reminder to stop, breathe, and choose the qualities that align with our best selves. It’s a reminder that we don’t need to remain tied to past versions of ourselves. Instead, we can embrace the possibility within each moment to choose again.

The Endless Journey of Becoming

The journey of becoming is lifelong. With each new day, we’re given the opportunity to redefine ourselves. Be is both an invitation and a reminder to embrace this journey fully. It calls on us to be bold, be true, and, above all, to be unapologetically ourselves.

So, let this piece be a reminder: You are not bound by who you were—you are free to choose who you want to be.
